Information

The Plant Variety Board administers the Act and regulations relating to the plant breeder's rights. This means that the Board determines applications for protection of plant variety rights. The Board also advises the Norwegian Food Safety Authority on approvals of plant varieties for certified production.

The Secretariat is responsible for preparation of meeting, drafting the Minutes and lists of plant varieties, implementing resolutions, international contact and day to day proceedings.

There are between 3-4 meetings every year. Legal protection is granted in 20-45 cases annually. A large share of the varieties belong to the ornamental plant species.

Applications for approval are dealt with at two meetings in February and March. These are mainly for cereals, potato and fodder crops, and 25-50 applications within this category are dealt with annually.

The Board is also a consultative body for a number of questions concerning plants and plant protection.
